Rules of Perceptual Organization: Part 5-- Figure-Ground Perception

Our last Rule of Perceptual Organization is Figure-Ground Perception.  This Rule of Perceptual Organization is determined by our ability to differentiate between an object that we are focusing on versus the background made up of many objects.  The picture above attempts to demonstrate how cameras can focus on one object (in this case the cup), causing the background to blur.  Although we as humans don't blur the background, we do use this concept of Figure-Ground Perception to make this delineation between the object we're focusing on and its background.  Stayed tuned for the next series in our Perceptual Laws:  Depth Cues!
