Rules of Perceptual Organization: Part 3-- Similarity
The next Rule of Perceptual Organization is that of Similarity. Similarity claims that if the characteristics of the objects are the same, then they will be perceived as a group. In the picture above, the two blue cups seem at first to be a group, while the clear cup is an interloper. Similarity is based on similar characteristics, in this case, the blue color, which is why we perceive the group. Characteristics can be anything from color and size to orientation.
